Learning Strategies

Learning Strategies (or Activities) focus on how students interact with the course material in your SI sessions. These activities are often categorized as Warm Ups, Main Activities, or Cool Downs, but there are many other ways to group activity ideas. Below is a guide to how activities are categorized here.

Many Learning Strategies fall under multiple categories. It’s also important to know that these activity ideas are just a starting point. Want to use an activity in a totally different way than described? Want to change it up or add on? Go for it. These are just to get you thinking.

You can view Learning Strategies filtered by category by using the drop down menu in the left side bar. Categories are described below.

Activities by Convenience

Looking to create some weekly session routines? Want to instill some good study habits or skills by creating some consistent activities? Did you spend a long time planning a very intricate main activity and you need something quick but beneficial? Just plain low on time and need more in your session? Look no further.

Activities by Focus or Purpose

What are you trying to achieve with your activity? Do you want to focus on vocabulary? Do you need to get some reading done? Is there a complex or controversial topic that should involve some group discussion? Do you have a group that really likes some healthy competition? Want to focus on improving study skills? No worries – you’ll find it here.

Activities by Length

Are you predicting a few minutes left over in your session that you want to fill with something meaningful? Need to have some shorter backup activities, in case another activity runs long? Still working on time management and aren’t sure how long activities are going to take? Say no more.

Activities by Time

This category is kind of a catch all name – the time when you’d do the activity. Need something to open the session with (warm up)? Need something to close the session with (cool down)? Looking to preview upcoming content? Exam review session activities? Post-exam session reflections? This must be the place.
